UK Backs Fair Election Processes in Bangladesh: Insights from Sarah Cooke

UK High Commissioner Sarah Cooke expresses support for fair elections in Bangladesh. Discussion included voter registration and preparations for the next election. The EC is adjusting policies for observers and aims to meet election timelines.

The UK is committed to fostering a conducive environment for “free, fair, and inclusive” elections in Bangladesh, as stated by British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cooke, on March 10. After a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, Cooke described their discussions as productive, focusing on the preparations for the upcoming general election and the involvement of foreign observers.

Commissioner Uddin emphasized the ongoing voter registration program and the announcement inviting political parties to register. He noted that the Election Commission (EC) is gearing up for procurement processes essential for the elections, which can be time-consuming.

Regarding election observation, Uddin mentioned that while the foreign observer policy is set, the domestic observer policy requires revisions. The EC plans to timely seek applications for foreign observers ahead of the national elections.

Uddin informed Cooke about the established election timeline, indicating that elections could occur as early as December, requiring the schedule announcement by October. The EC’s preparations are focused on adhering to this timeline to ensure smooth electoral processes, and the Chief Election Commissioner welcomed any assistance from the UK in training election agents and observers on electoral rules and regulations.

The UK is actively supporting Bangladesh’s efforts to conduct fair elections, with a focus on logistics, training, and observer involvement. The Chief Election Commission is working diligently to meet critical timelines and ensure that both the voter registration and procurement processes align with the impending elections.
