Türkiye’s ambassador to Uganda, Fatih Ak, marked International Women’s Day by emphasizing the importance of hygiene products for women. TIKA donated equipment for making reusable sanitary pads to support young women’s economic independence. The effort focuses on empowering women through improved access to essential hygiene products and job opportunities.
On International Women’s Day, Türkiye’s ambassador to Uganda, Fatih Ak, emphasized the significance of essential hygiene products for women and girls in the country. At this event, Türkiye’s state aid agency TIKA introduced equipment for the production of reusable sanitary pads, aiding young women’s access to basic hygiene.
The donated equipment consists of sewing and overlock machines, provided to Msichana Uganda, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young girls and women. The ambassador stated, “As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we are delighted to mark another successful project under the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) here in Uganda.”
Highlighting the extensive development cooperation between Türkiye and Uganda, Ak noted that TIKA has completed 94 projects in Uganda since the early 2000s. These projects reflect a strong bilateral relationship and a shared commitment to progress.
Murat Cetin, TIKA’s country coordinator, explained that the newly provided equipment will foster job opportunities for young women and promote hygiene awareness. He mentioned that they donated five sewing machines, two overlock machines, and specialized fabrics to help produce reusable hygiene products.
Winnie Nakandi, director of Msichana Uganda, expressed appreciation for the Turkish assistance, underscoring the importance of empowering women for justice and social prosperity. She stated, “We remain steadfast in our struggle to support underprivileged girls and women to access reusable pads.”
Reusable sanitary pads offer a cost-effective alternative for low-income earners, making them essential for improving women’s health and independence.
