Mr. Simon Agianab, Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC), emphasized the need for President John Mahama, Speaker Alban Bagbin, and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo to prioritize journalists’ welfare. His statement followed his re-election for a second three-year term on March 7, 2025, as leader of the PPC.
Agianab urged national leaders to enhance working conditions for journalists, ensure their safety, and provide necessary resources for effective reporting. He mentioned, “A vibrant democratic society thrives on the watchdog role of journalists,” underlining the necessity of a free and well-supported press.
While addressing PPC members at Parliament House, Agianab affirmed the commitment of the elected executives to advocate for the interests and welfare of their members. The PPC’s role in covering legislative activities is crucial for holding public officials accountable, thereby reinforcing press freedom and democracy in Ghana.
In the recent PPC elections, Mr. Francis Ekow Anan secured the Deputy Secretary position with 43 votes, and Mr. Kwaku Sakyi-Danso retained the General Secretary position with 42 votes. Ms. Deborah Dzivenu from Mountain Radio was elected as the new treasurer with 44 votes, while Mr. Ibrahim Alhassan and Mr. Stephen Odoi-Larbi were re-elected as Organizing Secretary and Vice-Dean respectively.
The newly elected executives are set to lead the PPC in covering parliamentary affairs for the next three years, ensuring that journalists’ welfare remains a focus.
