Nigeria’s Progress Under Tinubu: Presidential Assurance Amid Challenges

The Nigerian Presidency claims progress under President Bola Tinubu, addressing concerns from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference about unemployment, security, and economic conditions. Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga highlighted improvements in security, economic stabilization, and initiatives to create over 10 million jobs. He also mentioned praises from international bodies while acknowledging ongoing hardships faced by many Nigerians.

The Presidency has reiterated that Nigeria is on a path of improvement under President Bola Tinubu, responding to the concerns raised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, while challenges persist, the government has made advances in security, economic stability, and youth empowerment.

In a statement after comments by CBCN President, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru, Onanuga emphasized that the government acknowledges prevailing issues such as unemployment and corruption, and called for prompt action from leadership. He expressed appreciation for the bishops’ commitment to national unity and governance interventions.

On security matters, Onanuga noted improvements, stating that Nigeria is now more secure than it was in 2023. He praised the military’s efforts that have led to the elimination of over 8,000 criminals, thereby aiding in the rescue of more than 10,000 Nigerians.

He pointed out that enhanced security has allowed farmers to return to their fields, which has contributed to increased food production and lower commodity costs. In terms of economic stabilization, he reported on the strengthening of Nigeria’s financial standing, including an improved balance of trade and foreign reserves.

Additionally, initiatives focused on job creation and youth empowerment, such as 3MTT and NATEP, are projected to create over 10 million new jobs. The Presidency also plans to enhance spending in infrastructure, healthcare, and education, illustrated by the N54.9 trillion 2025 budget aimed at economic revitalization.

Onanuga cited positive international recognition, especially from Chatham House, commending Nigeria’s economic competitiveness due to Tinubu’s reforms. Despite recognizing ongoing economic hardship, he assured that the government is committed to making sound decisions for the future.

The article conveys that the Nigerian Presidency asserts significant progress under Tinubu’s leadership, particularly in security and economic stabilization. While acknowledging ongoing challenges, the government emphasizes its commitment to job creation and infrastructure spending, outlining initiatives aimed at improving citizens’ livelihoods. International acknowledgment of Nigeria’s economic competitiveness further supports the claims of governance improvements, despite criticisms regarding inflation and socio-economic hardships.
