Malawi has suspended school lessons as Tropical Storm Jude intensifies, bringing threats of heavy rain and flooding. Officials warn of risks especially in southern districts, where rivers may overflow. Authorities, including DODMA, are preparing to aid affected communities as the storm approaches, recalling the devastation from Cyclone Freddy in 2023.
The Malawi Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has suspended school lessons in several districts from today until Thursday due to an intensifying storm. This decision prioritizes the safety of students and staff as the region braces for hazardous weather.
Dr. Rachel Chimboea Huey, the Principal Secretary, stated that the closure aligns with a weather advisory from the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, responding specifically to Tropical Storm Jude. “We are responding to the forecast of Tropical Storm Jude, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and significant winds to various parts of the country,” expressed Huey. She also noted warnings of flash flooding in southern districts, where rivers like the Shire River are vulnerable to overflowing.
This morning, the storm made landfall in nearby Mozambique, arousing concerns about its potential to deliver heavy rain to Malawi. Journalist George Mhango reported that, as of now, Blantyre has only experienced light showers and limited storm impacts. However, officials continue to warn of increasing storm severity throughout the day.
Weather experts anticipate that Tropical Storm Jude could unleash over 100mm of rain in certain areas within a span of 24 hours, which poses a risk for extensive flooding. “The situation is particularly concerning in the southern districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje,” noted Mhango, highlighting these regions’ vulnerability to flooding due to the swollen Shire River.
The Department of Disaster Management (DODMA) is collaborating with organizations like the Red Cross to prepare for the storm’s impact. Efforts include ensuring access to food, water, and shelter for affected individuals. DODMA has begun issuing safety alerts and guidance to encourage public precautions.
Malawi’s resilience is being tested once again, as many are still recovering from the devastation caused by Cyclone Freddy in 2023. “People are understandably nervous,” Mhango observed, noting the community’s apprehension about experiencing similar catastrophic events from the past.
Tropical Storm Jude poses a substantial threat to Malawi, prompting school closures and significant preparation efforts from authorities. With warnings of heavy rainfall and potential flooding, communities are advised to take precautions seriously. The lingering memories of Cyclone Freddy’s damage highlight the urgency of this situation as DODMA and various organizations work to mitigate storm impacts.
