Kenya and Hungary are preparing to sign two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focused on the Education and Agriculture sectors to strengthen their bilateral relationship. The agreements aim to enhance partnerships and explore new collaborative opportunities, leveraging the potential in these fields.
Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has traveled to Budapest, Hungary, to sign these agreements on Kenya’s behalf. This visit, from February 10-13, 2025, follows an invitation from Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who had previously visited Kenya, indicating the mutual interest in furthering cooperation.
Hungary plays a significant role in education for Kenyan students, offering 200 scholarships each year through the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme. In agriculture, Mudavadi and Szijjártó plan to formalize arrangements focused on sharing expertise and best practices to boost agricultural productivity in both nations, according to the statement from Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs.
Hungary has initiated a Demo Farm in Kenya, showcasing modern agricultural technologies and innovations that contribute to food and nutrition security. The new MoU will facilitate increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) between the two nations, specifically in modern mechanization and value addition within the agricultural sector.
Additionally, discussions will occur regarding a previous MoU on nuclear energy cooperation signed early last year. This includes the exchange of knowledge on utilizing nuclear energy as a clean and renewable resource.
Finally, both leaders aim to rejuvenate the long-standing relationship between Kenya and Hungary, which began in 1963. Hungary was notably the sixth country to establish a diplomatic mission in Nairobi after Kenya’s independence.
