Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine and leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has condemned a small elite group for depleting Uganda’s resources and exacerbating poverty among the population. In a recent address during the intensifying Kawempe North by-election campaign, he referenced comments by Inspector General of Government Betty Kamya. Kyagulanyi highlighted that out of Uganda’s 49 million citizens, only about 35,000 individuals manage public funds and control decision-making, leading to the theft of over 10 trillion shillings annually.
He attributes widespread corruption to this elite group, claiming it has left crucial sectors like education and healthcare in disarray. “They are the ones who have turned Uganda into one of the most corrupt countries in the world,” he stated, pointing out the lack of functional schools, hospitals, and factories as a direct result of their actions. Moreover, he raised concerns about the economic issues driving many young Ugandans to seek jobs abroad, often in low-paying positions.
Kyagulanyi remarked on the plight of youth, emphasizing the increase in young Ugandans traveling to the Middle East to work as maids, attributing this exodus to the same corrupt elite. He accused this group of employing state security forces to intimidate and silence dissenters. “They are the ones who send the impoverished military and police to beat up those who speak against corruption,” he said, underscoring the dire situation for critics of the regime.
As the elections approach, Kyagulanyi has urged Ugandans to choose a side—either stand with the oppressed citizens or align with the small group of oppressors. He was campaigning for NUP’s candidate, Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, emphasizing the significance of the by-election following the passing of MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, who previously held the seat. With the by-election set for March 13, NUP is anticipated to retain control over this significant constituency.
