Meanwhile, grassroots movements showcase a persistent resistance spirit crucial in combatting occupation and asserting national rights.
In southern Lebanon, the Israeli regime promotes a colonial narrative claiming the region as northern Galilee, proposing settlements as part of a so-called Greater Israel. This plan has garnered support from Israeli Knesset members and investment firms. Such expansion reflects measures taken in the past regarding the West Bank, which, although considered unattainable decades ago, have become reality through violations of international law and UN resolutions.
The Lebanese military’s effectiveness in deterring future aggressions is crucial to preventing further invasions, especially in light of the ongoing situation in Syria. Reports indicate that the Lebanese army has received directives from the United States to avoid stockpiling weapons designated for resistance groups south of the Litani River. There are discussions about either securing or destroying remaining arms to prevent them from reaching Hezbollah, which poses a strategic challenge.
Historically, leaders like Abdel Nasser inspired resistance against oppression, with the ongoing calls within Lebanon reflecting a misguided notion of exclusive weapon control. This viewpoint diminishes the natural human inclination to resist injustice. Resistance to occupation transcends state boundaries and is a fundamental right recognized in international law, notably in UN General Assembly Resolution No. 45/130, which advocates for armed struggle against colonial domination.
The right to armed resistance is further reinforced by Article 51 of the UN Charter that affirms any state’s duty to defend itself during armed aggression. The legitimacy of armed resistance ultimately derives from its purpose: liberation of land and the right to live with dignity. The Lebanese resistance successfully liberated southern Lebanon after over two decades of occupation, thereby establishing a deterrent force against future Israeli aggressions.
Despite this, the Lebanese army has struggled to effectively counter Israeli threats historically, with instances where factions broke away to collaborate with occupiers. In recent months, grassroots resistance from local populations has emerged prominently, working alongside military efforts to reclaim villages from Israeli occupation.
A critical question arises: Can the Lebanese army assure the protection of southern Lebanon against further Zionist encroachment? This inquiry challenges calls for disarmament of resistance movements, particularly given the army’s perceived inaction amid recent Israeli provocations, raising doubts about its capacity to secure the region.
