Qatar calls on the IAEA to inspect all Israeli nuclear facilities and urges Israel to join the NPT. Qatar’s Ambassador highlights Israel’s nuclear arsenal, its refusal to sign the NPT, and ongoing aggressive policies against Palestinians. A formal memorandum has been submitted to the International Court of Justice, seeking clarification on Israel’s obligations regarding UN operations.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally requested the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee all Israeli nuclear facilities. At a UN atomic agency session, Ambassador Jassim Yacoub al-Hammadi called for Israel to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). He emphasized the international community’s responsibility to ensure compliance with UN Security Council and IAEA resolutions demanding IAEA safeguards for Israel’s nuclear activities.
Ambassador Hammadi advocated for increased efforts to include Israel in the NPT as a non-nuclear entity. Currently, all Middle Eastern nations, except Israel, participate in the NPT and have ratified safeguard agreements with the IAEA. Israel is estimated to hold between 200 and 400 nuclear warheads, maintaining a unique status as the only non-conventional arms holder in West Asia, while rejecting both NPT membership and IAEA inspections.
In addition to nuclear concerns, Hammadi reiterated Qatar’s commitment to addressing Israel’s aggressive policies against Palestinians, which include military actions and humanitarian blockades. He revealed that Qatar submitted a request to the International Court of Justice for an advisory opinion on Israel’s obligations regarding the operations of the UN and other international agencies.
This memorandum reaffirms Israel’s responsibility to permit UN agencies, especially UNRWA, to function within occupied territories and to safeguard UN property, including educational and medical facilities. Hammadi stressed the urgency for the international community to compel Israel to implement international resolutions, support Palestinian self-determination, and contribute to regional stability.
Qatar has urged the IAEA to oversee Israeli nuclear facilities, highlighting the imperative for Israel to comply with international nuclear regulations. Concurrently, Qatar emphasizes the need for Israel to mitigate its aggressive policies toward Palestinians and allow humanitarian operations in occupied territories. The call for compliance with international resolutions underlines a broader goal of ensuring regional stability and recognition of Palestinian rights.
