The government of Kenya is undertaking a renovation and renaming project for Sabata Secondary School in Trans Nzoia County, in honor of the late Wafula Chebukati, former Chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). This decision follows a suggestion made by Kiminini Legislator Kakai Bisau during Chebukati’s burial service, and President William Ruto, who was present, has approved the initiative.
The school will undergo significant renovations which include constructing 15 modern classrooms. Legislator Bisau emphasized the importance of renaming the school, describing Chebukati’s announcement of the 2022 presidential results as pivotal in preventing potential bloodshed. He stated, “Wafula Chebukati was no ordinary Kenyan… Chebukati stood out with the values of integrity and fear of the law. The announcement of the presidential results summed up the man he was.”
In addition to the renovations and new classrooms, Sabata Secondary School has been selected to serve as a digital center of excellence at Bisau’s behest. He remarked, “Chebukati was an IT lover and enthusiast. We would want to see a digital centre of excellence being set up at Sabata Secondary.” This initiative aims to provide the local youth and community with digital opportunities, thereby fostering employment as part of the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
