Brice Nguema Declares Candidacy for Gabon’s April 2025 Presidential Election

Brice Nguema, Gabon’s transition leader since the 2023 coup, has declared his candidacy for the April 2025 presidential election after receiving approval from the Ministry of National Defense. He plans to run as an independent candidate under a platform called “The Builders’ Movement,” inviting collaboration from various groups to support his vision for Gabon’s future, following a significant political shift after the ousting of President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

General Brice Oligui Nguema, the transitional leader of Gabon since the 2023 coup, has officially declared his candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for April 2025. He registered his candidacy at the Ministry of the Interior, positioning himself for a significant political role in the upcoming elections.

Nguema has received approval from the Ministry of National Defense, confirming his eligibility to participate in Gabonese politics. “I am happy today to inform you that the Ministry of National Defense has favourably responded to my availability request,” he announced, indicating his readiness to assume a political role since February 27, 2025.

Despite discussions regarding the formation of a political party, Nguema will run as an independent candidate. He introduced a political campaign platform titled “The Builders’ Movement,” aimed at uniting various societal groups, including political parties, unions, and intellectuals, to support his vision for Gabon’s future.

“There is no reason to create a party. Time does not allow us to do so. But like the others, I will go as an independent,” he emphasized, calling for collaboration among associations and youth organizations to propel the nation forward. Nguema’s bid for presidency reflects his ongoing commitment to stabilizing Gabon following the military ousting of President Ali Bongo Ondimba in August 2023, which was driven by allegations of electoral discrepancies and governance issues.

General Brice Oligui Nguema’s candidacy for Gabon’s presidential election is a critical milestone in the nation’s political landscape. His transition leadership, characterized by efforts to stabilize the country post-coup, reflects a commitment to shaping Gabon’s future. By running as an independent under “The Builders’ Movement,” he seeks to unite various sectors for national development, marking a pivotal moment in Gabon’s transition to civilian governance.
