A team of South Sudanese fighters departed from Juba bound for Thailand to participate in the World Muay Thai Championship. The event commenced on March 4 and is scheduled to culminate on March 18. Participating nations include Algeria, Russia, the Netherlands, Canada, Italy, France, Iran, Brazil, Latvia, the Philippines, Spain, Thailand, Myanmar, India, and China.
The South Sudanese delegation consists of fighters Abednego Thon (Wizzy), Sky Okony, and James Majok Gau. Puro Okello Oboo, President of the South Sudan Kickboxing Federation (SSKF), stated at Juba International Airport that the athletes are thoroughly prepared to strive for victory. He asserted, “We are traveling to Thailand to represent South Sudan in the ongoing championship. The fighters are prepared and will bring good results.”
Wizzy expressed his appreciation for the chance to represent the country, stating, “We are happy to represent South Sudan. We are hopeful that we will bring home a trophy as a sign of unity.” Okony highlighted the sport’s role in enhancing social ties, remarking, “All eyes of the South Sudanese are on us.
