The importance of collaboration among sectors to foster an inclusive economy was strongly reiterated by multiple leaders.
Hannatu Musawa, Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, has underscored the essentiality of public-private partnerships in fostering gender parity. Speaking at the Nigerian Exchange Ltd.’s (NGX) International Women’s Day event, she highlighted the pressing need to address challenges faced by women and girls that hinder their potential. The event’s theme, “Accelerate Action for All Women: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” emphasizes proactive engagement in enhancing women’s rights and empowerment.
Musawa pointed to a Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) report indicating that women-owned businesses contribute approximately $15 billion to Nigeria’s economy, yet they often face difficulties in accessing financial resources. She asserted that achieving a gender-equal future necessitates collaboration across public and private sectors, advocating for investment in gender-specific funding opportunities and investments to empower women in leadership and innovation.
Musawa commended NGX for its role in facilitating resources for women-owned enterprises and gender-focused initiatives. Alhaji Umaru Kwairanga, Group Chairman of NGX Group, echoed the need for the private sector, regulatory bodies, and society to collectively ensure women’s better access to capital. He emphasized that a thriving economy is inherently inclusive and mentioned the NGX’s commitment to enhancing women’s participation in capital markets through education and data-driven approaches.
Temi Popoola, Group CEO of NGX Group, extended his appreciation to women for their support within the exchange, highlighting their achievements as pivotal to progress. Additionally, Haruna Jalo-Waziri from Central Securities Clearing Systems (CSCS) urged for collaboration between genders to create a balanced society.
Dr. Emomotimi Agama, SEC Director-General, encouraged men to respect and nurture women, acknowledging their resilience and resourcefulness. Contributions from other leaders, including governmental advisors and university officials, called for strengthened cooperation between NGX and the government to amplify investments in women’s initiatives, combat social barriers, and promote authentic financial knowledge among women.
The overarching message from various speakers at the event is the imperative for active engagement, investment, and support within both public and private sectors to create an equitable environment conducive to women’s prosperity in Nigeria. Hilda Baci, CEO of Food by Hilda, urged continuous learning and mutual support among women to approach equality as a unified goal.
The need for public-private collaboration to promote gender equality was a key focus during the recent International Women’s Day celebration organized by NGX. Leading figures emphasized the importance of addressing the systemic challenges women face, particularly in accessing capital. A strong call to action was made for inclusive practices and investment in women’s empowerment initiatives to drive progress in Nigerian society.
