On March 5, 2025, Morocco celebrated the acquisition of AH-64E Apache helicopters during a ceremony at Sale Air Base, near Rabat. This procurement enhances the capabilities of the Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) while aligning with the foreign policy and national security interests of the United States. Gen. Michael Langley from U.S. Africa Command emphasized that this move significantly advances Morocco’s security and warfighting capabilities.
The helicopters, part of a Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) program initiated in 2020, arrived in Morocco last month from the U.S. U.S. Charge d’Affaires Aimee Cutrona remarked on the long-standing partnership between the two nations, citing Morocco’s recognition of U.S. independence nearly 250 years ago. She noted the growing security cooperation that benefits both countries in regional and global contexts.
Originally developed in 2012, the AH-64E model boasts enhanced capabilities, including improved digital connectivity, more powerful engines, UAV control capability, full IFR capability, and better landing gear. The helicopters can reach speeds of 150 knots (278 km/h) with a range exceeding 450 km. Lt. Col. James Anderson highlighted that these advanced aircraft improve Morocco’s ability to secure borders and combat regional terrorism.
Additionally, the Utah Army National Guard collaborates with Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces through the State Partnership Program (SPP), fostering extensive training and relationships. Maj. Jared Sorensen expressed anticipation for joint training opportunities with the Apache helicopters, aiming to enhance operational effectiveness.
To date, 24 RMAF pilots have received training in the U.S., qualifying them as helicopter pilots along with five instructor pilots, with more expected soon. There are plans for specific training on these Apache helicopters, ensuring the squadron’s operational readiness within six months. Gen. Langley stated that these aircraft provide vital tools to further mutual security objectives in the region, underscoring Morocco’s role as a major non-NATO ally and a critical partner for the U.S.
