Call for Justice After Nigerian Player Abubakar Lawal’s Death in Uganda

Mansour Lawal, brother of deceased Nigerian player Abubakar Lawal, calls for justice regarding his brother’s mysterious death in Uganda. Initially reported as a motorcycle accident, authorities later stated he fell from a mall balcony. The Nigerian government is cooperating with Ugandan officials for an investigation, as Lawal’s tragic passing deeply affected friends and fans.

Mansour Lawal, the elder brother of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian football player who passed away in Uganda, is calling for an investigation into his brother’s tragic death. He urged both the Nigerian and Ugandan governments to act in pursuit of justice. Lawal’s death was reported by his football club and the Ugandan Police on February 24, initially attributed to a motorcycle accident before authorities stated he fell from a balcony in Kampala while visiting a friend.
Abubakar Lawal, aged 29, was buried in his home state of Sokoto on February 25, where he received tributes from his club Vipers SC and their supporters. In a video shared by Vipers SC, Mansour expressed gratitude to various stakeholders: “I thank the president of Vipers Club for making sure the remains of Abubakar Lawal returned home… We also thank the Nigerian government and the Sokoto State for the great job they did”.
The Nigerian government, along with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and Nigerian High Commission in Uganda, has committed to uncovering the truth regarding Lawal’s death. The Ugandan Police provided information indicating that Lawal was visiting his Tanzanian friend Omary Naima when the incident occurred.
According to preliminary reports, Lawal arrived at the mall in a vehicle and was left alone in a room while Naima went to play games. Shortly thereafter, he fell from the balcony around 8 AM and was later declared dead at Entebbe Referral Hospital.
The Nigerian Embassy has been proactive in the matter, with Ambassador Shama Shanga engaging authorities for a thorough inquiry. NiDCOM Chairman Dabiri-Erewa expressed concern, stating, “This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover-up at all.” Lawal had a career in football that took him from Wikki Tourists to Nasarawa United, before moving to As Kigali in 2020, and finally to Vipers SC in Uganda.

Mansour Lawal’s plea for justice after his brother Abubakar’s unexpected death highlights the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The coordinated response from Nigerian and Ugandan authorities, along with heartfelt tributes to the late player, underscores the impact of his loss in both nations. Ongoing investigations, supported by governmental bodies, aim to provide clarity and justice for the grieving family.
