A tragic tanker explosion occurred in Karamin Rami village, Mashegu Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals and leaving one person injured. The incident took place on March 4, 2025, at around 6:30 p.m., as reported by Ibrahim Hussaini, Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).
The explosion was triggered when a tanker truck transporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control on a dilapidated road. As a consequence, the fuel spilled into a stream near rice fields where farmers were working. The spillage ignited a fire that spread back to the tanker, leading to a catastrophic explosion.
Hussaini noted that the fire destroyed the farmland, including rice fields, fruits, and vegetation. The deceased have been identified as Rafiatu Sahabi, Ramlat Shehu, Rashida Abdullahi Raliya, Abdulrahaman, Zainab Ahmed, Zuwaira Idrisu, and Maryam A. Nura.
In addition, Maimuna Isah, who was among the farmers on the site, sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at Saho Rami Primary Health Care.
The tanker explosion in Niger not only led to the tragic loss of seven lives but also obliterated agricultural land. The incident underscores the dangers associated with poorly maintained roads and the transport of hazardous materials. Continued efforts are needed to ensure road safety and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
