Safaricom’s new Tier 3+ data centre in Limuru strengthens digital resilience by ensuring seamless connectivity and compliance with data security regulations. The first phase of the centre is complete, with a vision for expansion and a focus on enhancing customer service reliability, particularly for services like M-PESA, with a proven uptime of 99.982%.
Safaricom has launched a new Tier 3+ data centre in Limuru, enhancing its digital resilience and ensuring seamless connectivity for customers. This facility is critical for maintaining high uptime and compliance with data security regulations crucial to today’s digital transactions. Located in the cooler climes of Redhill, Limuru, it serves as a crucial hub for Safaricom’s operations.
The new data centre is part of a long-term plan that includes three facilities, with the first phase recently completed. Maxwell Ndei, Program Manager at Safaricom, acknowledged the collaborative effort involved in the construction, emphasizing the human dedication behind the project. This included contributions from various teams and local support.
A data centre is fundamentally a physical location housing essential applications and data. Due to the sensitivity and growing volume of data, robust IT infrastructure is necessary to ensure consistent performance. With the new facility, according to Principal Engineer Joshua Ogoti, customers can expect improved stability, allowing for increased transactions per second, particularly for services like M-PESA.
Safaricom strategically chose Limuru for its data centre to ensure adherence to Kenya’s data privacy laws and showcase environmental responsibility. Data centre performance is categorized by tiers from 1 to 4, with Tier 3+ indicating a high level of reliability. Safaricom’s centre offers 99.982% uptime and advanced cooling systems, approaching the standards of industry giants like AWS and Microsoft.
“When we call it world-class, we’ve already been tested in terms of best practices and industry standards, and that means we play in the same league with Google and Microsoft,” stated Esther Karuga, Senior Manager at the Limuru Data Center. This highlights the centre’s competitive capability on a global scale.
The opening of Safaricom’s Tier 3+ data centre in Limuru marks a significant advancement in Kenya’s digital infrastructure, ensuring high uptime, resilience, and compliance with security regulations. The facility’s strategic location and commitment to best practices place it among the global leaders in data service. This development not only enhances connectivity for Safaricom customers but also positions Kenya as an emerging hub for digital innovation.
