Orrington Couple Prepares for 103-Mile Ultra Marathon in Nepal

Orrington couple Jason and Meaghan Geroux are competing in a 103-mile ultra marathon in Mustang, Nepal. Experienced marathoners, they aim to inspire others as they tackle this mental and physical challenge together, emphasizing their shared passion for fitness and adventure.

Jason and Meaghan Geroux, a couple from Orrington, are set to compete in a 100-plus mile ultra marathon in Mustang, Nepal. They are avid travelers with a shared enthusiasm for fitness and have participated in numerous marathons globally, including locations such as Iceland and Ireland. Their interest has now shifted to ultra marathons, which typically range from 26.2 to over 100 miles.

“We both just fell in love with like putting up these big numbers and were like ‘well that’s kinda cool, well where’s the ceiling, how far can we push it,'” stated Jason Geroux. They maintain year-round training, regardless of weather conditions, to ensure they are always prepared.

“Pushing yourself further and longer is something you don’t think you can do until you do it,” added Meaghan Geroux. In the coming weeks, they will join 50 other competitors in a 103-mile race across the challenging terrain of the Himalayas.

The couple discovered their love for the Himalayas in 2019 while visiting Everest Base Camp. They were inspired to compete in ultra marathons upon witnessing a race during their trip. Jason remarked, “We saw a race going on that year and said ‘maybe someday we’ll be that cool.'” Six years later, they are pursuing this aspiration, running extensive distances over eight days, often sacrificing sleep to meet their racing goals.

Meaghan emphasized the mental challenge of night runs, noting, “Getting through the night-time hour is a really mental challenge, because you want to sleep, so I think that’s the biggest challenge with ultras.” Notably, they undertake this endeavor without sponsorship, embracing it during their leisure time while balancing their careers—Meaghan as a dietician and Jason as an epoxy floor contractor.

“I just want to try to rub off on the people that I’m around, to say ‘hey you can do this too, I’m just a regular guy,'” explained Jason. Their overarching aim is to motivate others to embrace similar challenges, with Meaghan expressing optimism about their journey: “It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be challenging, but I think it’s going to be a great accomplishment when we’re done and we’ll do it together.”

Jason and Meaghan Geroux exemplify determination as they prepare for a 103-mile ultra marathon in Nepal, drawing on their past experiences and love for travel and fitness. Their journey emphasizes not only physical endurance but also the mental strength required for such challenges. Through their efforts, they hope to inspire others to pursue their own fitness goals. The couple’s commitment to training and teamwork underscores the spirit of overcoming obstacles, motivating others to embark on similar adventures.
