Iraq Ranked 12th in Arab World for AI Readiness, 107th Globally

Iraq ranks 12th in the Arab region and 107th globally in the AI Readiness Index for 2024, scoring 40.91 out of 100. The country shows significant room for improvement in government readiness, technology sector capability, and data infrastructure. The UAE leads the Arab world, while the U.S. tops the global rankings. Plans to develop a national AI strategy are underway.

Iraq has been ranked 12th in the Arab world and 107th globally according to the 2024 Government AI Readiness Index released by Oxford Insights. The index evaluates AI readiness across 188 countries using 40 indicators categorized into three main pillars: government quality, technology sector capability, and data & infrastructure development. Iraq achieved an overall score of 40.91 out of 100, with specific scores of 32 for government readiness, 35.87 for the technology sector, and 54.25 for data and infrastructure.

In the Arab region, the United Arab Emirates took the lead with a remarkable score of 75.66, followed by Saudi Arabia with 72 points, Qatar at 68, Oman with 62, and Jordan at 61. Egypt secured the sixth position with 59 points, while Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Morocco followed with scores of 54, 51, 46, 43, and 41 respectively.

Globally, the index was topped by the United States with 87 points, followed by Singapore at 84 points and France with 79. To improve AI adoption, the Office of the Prime Minister’s Advisor has unveiled plans to establish a national AI strategy aimed at fostering knowledge-building and the integration of AI technologies by July 2024.
