The Cyprus Embassy has confirmed that certain learning institutions recently discredited by the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) were operating without legal sanction. Amidst a long-standing tradition of Zimbabwean students seeking higher education in Cyprus, ZIMCHE has recently blacklisted universities including Sharda University and several others located in Cyprus, such as Girne American University, due to the lack of internationally-recognized qualifications being offered.
ZIMCHE initially accredited some of these institutions but later found that they could not provide adequate academic standards. Nestoras Nestoros, the Honorary Consul of Cyprus in Zimbabwe, emphasized that deregistered institutions were not recognized in Cyprus or other nations. He highlighted that several universities operated illegally in northern Cyprus, contravening United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Nestoros expressed relief over ZIMCHE’s decision, acknowledging the previously misguided accreditation that resulted in numerous Zimbabwean students pursuing education at these now-discredited universities. He noted that this action rectifies an earlier injustice faced by Zimbabweans.
He clarified the status of the University of Nicosia, emphasizing its legal registration with the Republic of Cyprus and its notable international standing, despite ZIMCHE’s recent action due to an expired license. The university is actively working to renew its registration in Zimbabwe, and many Zimbabwean students have benefited from its programs.
ZIMCHE also flagged several Indian institutions, such as Sharda University and Parul University, citing concerns about their credibility. The Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe refrained from commenting, indicating that the decision lies with the Zimbabwean government.
