Canada Rugby Sevens Team Advances in Challenger Series Semifinals

The Canadian men’s rugby sevens team secured semifinals with victories over Tonga and Uganda, with key contributions from Kal Sager and Jamie Armstrong. They aim to finish in the top four of the Challenger Series to qualify for a promotion tournament.

In Cape Town, the Canadian men’s rugby sevens team achieved a dominant 38-7 victory over Uganda, securing their place in the semifinals of the HSBC Sevens Challenger Series. Kal Sager contributed significantly to the win by scoring two of the six tries, while Ethan Hager, Jamie Armstrong, Kyle Tremblay, and Ethan Turner also found the try zone. Conversions were added by Thomas Isherwood, Brenden Black, Armstrong, and Turner.

Earlier, Canada edged past Tonga 26-24, showcasing Armstrong’s skills as he scored two tries. Sager and Morgan Di Nardo added single tries with Armstrong and Isherwood contributing three conversions between them. Despite leading at crucial moments, Canada had to manage Tonga’s comeback attempts effectively.

Canada previously finished as the runner-up in the first round of the Challenger Series held last week in Cape Town. Despite being unbeaten until the final, they lost 33-7 to Chile, which ultimately led to their relegation from the elite HSBC SVNS circuit after suffering a loss to Spain in June.

The team’s target is to finish in the top four in this three-event Challenger Series, allowing them competition in a promotion/relegation tournament in May in Carson, California. This tournament will feature the top four from the Challenger Series against the bottom four from the HSBC SVNS.

Cape Town will host the first two rounds of the Challenger Series, with the second event scheduled for March 7-8. The finale for the top eight teams will take place in Krakow, Poland, in April, wrapping up the series.

The Canadian men’s rugby sevens team has shown strong performance by winning two matches and advancing to the semifinals of the HSBC Sevens Challenger Series. With key players contributing tries and conversions, the team is effectively positioning itself to compete for promotion back to the elite tier. Their upcoming matches will be crucial for their aspirations of regaining their place in the HSBC SVNS circuit.
