Camrail Invests CFA12bn Annually in Cameroon’s Railway Network

Camrail invests nearly CFA12 billion annually in Cameroon’s rail transport and pays CFA10 billion in state taxes. This was announced during the Yaoundé Economic Meetings. Camrail’s role includes facilitating exports and enhancing logistics efficiency. AGL emphasizes digitalization and sustainability as strategic priorities for growth.

Camrail, the sole railway operator in Cameroon, announced an annual investment of nearly CFA12 billion in the country’s rail transport. Additionally, the company contributes roughly CFA10 billion each year in taxes to the state. This information was shared during the Yaoundé Economic Meetings organized by the Cameroon Employers’ Association (GICAM) on February 26-27, 2025.

At the event, Camrail’s Commercial and Marketing Director, Alain Minoué, emphasized the company’s multifaceted contributions, stating that Camrail not only provides mobility solutions but also streamlines port operations and enhances corridor competitiveness. Furthermore, the railway system is vital for exporting large quantities of goods such as raw timber, cotton fiber, and gum arabic, which are primarily sourced from Chad and the Central African Republic. These activities significantly boost Cameroon’s foreign exchange earnings.

Having taken over the national railway operations in 1999 from the former state entity Regifercam, Camrail initially operated as a subsidiary of the French Bolloré Group and now as Africa Global Logistics (AGL). The company oversees the management of an extensive 918-kilometer railway network that caters to both passenger and freight transport.

Mama Nsounchiat Fit, Deputy Managing Director of AGL Cameroon, highlighted the importance of the Yaoundé Economic Meetings, describing it as an opportunity to engage with stakeholders while reaffirming the company’s commitment to providing modern, efficient, and sustainable logistics. AGL Cameroon is determined to enhance infrastructure and strategic services that contribute to national growth.

AGL has identified three strategic priorities for Cameroon: improving trade flow efficiency through tailored logistics solutions, accelerating the digitalization of logistics services to enhance operational effectiveness and competitiveness, and developing eco-friendly logistics solutions in line with the country’s environmental goals.

Camrail’s substantial annual investment in Cameroon’s railway network underscores its commitment to enhancing rail transport efficiency and economic growth. The company’s role in exporting essential goods contributes significantly to the nation’s foreign exchange earnings. AGL’s strategic focus on logistics improvement, digitalization, and sustainability reflects a concerted effort to modernize logistics services, supporting broader economic objectives within Cameroon.
