Cameroon Allocates CFA73 Billion for Road Development Projects in 2024

In 2024, Cameroon’s Jointly Financed Road Projects Unit awarded 35 contracts totaling CFA72.9 billion, with 87.5% execution. The budget was revised from CFA289 billion to CFA201 billion. Despite reductions, key infrastructure projects advanced, with significant road rehabilitation and expansion achieved.

Cameroon’s Jointly Financed Road Projects Unit, part of the Ministry of Public Works, awarded 35 contracts in 2024 totaling CFA72.9 billion, with an execution rate of 87.5%. The number of contracts was reduced from an initial plan of 40 to align with economic constraints, following a previous expectation of 71 contracts valued at CFA317 billion reported in March 2024.

The unit revised its annual budget from CFA289 billion to CFA201 billion, with a total expenditure of CFA130 billion, yielding a 64% execution rate. Originally, CFA284 billion had been designated for investments and CFA5 billion for operational costs, indicating strategic budgeting amidst financial challenges.

Despite budget reductions, significant infrastructure projects progressed effectively. The unit completed 13 studies, including four pertaining to road development over 661 km. Moreover, over 193 km of roads were either rehabilitated or upgraded, with 95% of the planned works achieved successfully.

Savings from various projects facilitated the funding of an additional 119 km of municipal roads. The funding also enabled the expansion of a 22 km stretch of Yaoundé’s northern access road and the rehabilitation of the Mora-Tchakamari road in the Far North region, showcasing a commitment to improving road infrastructure.

In summary, despite facing budget constraints by reducing the number of contracts and overall funding, Cameroon successfully executed critical road projects in 2024. With an execution rate of 87.5%, the projects involved comprehensive planning and completion, which contributes significantly to the country’s road infrastructure. Key activities included studies, road rehabilitation, and expansions, all aimed at enhancing connectivity and transport efficiency.
