US Ambassador Lucy Tamlyn condemned M23 rebels for kidnapping patients in Goma hospitals, asserting the need for accountability in human rights violations. The UN reported over 130 abductions, while M23 denied the accusations. The conflict has intensified, resulting in significant civilian displacement, and neighbors like Rwanda are accused of supporting M23, which they deny.
Lucy Tamlyn, the US ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has condemned recent actions by M23 rebels involving kidnappings in eastern Goma. She emphasized that these kidnappings demonstrate M23’s disregard for peace and the welfare of the local population. Tamlyn stated, “There is no excuse for these heinous acts,” urging accountability for human rights violations committed by the group.
The UN reported that more than 130 patients were abducted from hospitals by armed men posing as Congolese army soldiers or Wazalendo militia. In response, M23 denied the hospital attacks, labeling the accusations a “deliberate manipulation aimed at tarnishing our movement’s image.” Tamlyn countered their denial, asserting that M23 must face consequences for its actions and called for an immediate ceasefire while respecting Congo’s sovereignty.
Since December 2022, M23 has intensified its military activities, capturing key areas including Goma and Bukavu. Following Bukavu’s capture, the local government relocated to Uvira under the directive of President Felix Tshisekedi. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant displacement of civilians within the DRC and into neighboring countries, according to UN assessments.
Accusations have surfaced about Rwanda’s support for the M23 rebels, although Rwanda denies these claims. M23 asserts it defends minority Congolese Tutsis against discrimination linked to their ethnic ties with Rwanda. Recently, Germany joined the US and UK in imposing financial sanctions on Rwanda concerning its involvement in the conflict.
The actions of M23 rebels in eastern DRC have drawn sharp condemnation from US officials, highlighting a growing humanitarian crisis. The international community, including the US, Germany, and the UK, has taken a firm stance against the rebels and their alleged actions, calling for accountability and an end to hostilities. The situation underscores the importance of protecting human rights and the sovereignty of the DRC amidst an ongoing conflict fueled by ethnic tensions and regional dynamics.
