Lesotho Reacts to Trump’s Dismissive Remarks on International Aid and Recognition

Lesotho’s Foreign Minister criticized Trump’s remarks claiming the nation is unknown, expressing disappointment. During a congressional address, Trump questioned U.S. aid to Lesotho, which has historically received significant support. Despite the comments, Lesotho is working on tech developments through Elon Musk’s Starlink partnership.

Lesotho’s Foreign Minister, Lejone Mpotjoane, expressed disappointment over President Trump’s recent comments stating, “nobody has ever heard of” the small African nation during a congressional address. He emphasized that it is surprising to generalize that Lesotho is unknown, suggesting that such remarks may stem from its economic status. Mpotjoane warned that this attitude could lead to missed opportunities for cooperation in the future.

During Trump’s speech, he dismissed Lesotho’s relevance while questioning U.S. aid contracts, particularly a mention of $8 million intended for LGBTQI+ rights. This comment was met with laughter from U.S. lawmakers, including Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Lesotho has historically been a recipient of American assistance, notably over $44 million from USAID last year.

In response to inquiries regarding the $8 million contract, Minister Mpotjoane noted that he was unaware of it, pointing out that USAID distributions occur primarily through NGOs. Despite Trump’s remarks on Lesotho, the country maintains ties with influential figures, including Elon Musk, who recently met with Lesotho’s Prime Minister Sam Matekane to discuss implementing Starlink internet services for its citizens.

Musk’s company, SpaceX, seeks a 10-year license to operate Starlink in Lesotho, as confirmed by the Lesotho Communications Authority. This venture aligns with Musk’s goal of expanding internet access in African nations. Matekane shared images of his meeting with Musk in September, stating, “Exciting developments lie ahead.”

The comments made by President Trump regarding Lesotho have sparked criticism and disappointment, particularly from the country’s foreign minister. While Trump’s remarks trivialized Lesotho’s significance, the nation continues to receive substantial U.S. aid and is pursuing technological advancements through partnerships with influential figures like Elon Musk. This event highlights ongoing issues of awareness and representation of smaller nations in global politics.
