World Athletics chief Sebastian Coe expressed satisfaction with Kenya’s advancements in combating doping, a significant issue that has nearly tarnished the country’s sporting reputation. Following a meeting with Kenyan officials in Nairobi, Coe noted a markedly improved response compared to his previous visit in January 2023, where he characterized the journey as lengthy and challenging.
In response to several doping scandals, mostly linked to the 2016 Rio Olympics, Kenya has significantly dedicated resources to reform its anti-doping stance. An investment of $25 million over the next five years, announced in April 2023, is aimed at addressing these doping challenges.
Coe highlighted visible progress, including enhancements in anti-doping personnel, testing protocols, investigations, and educational initiatives, stating, “We are moving in the right direction.” He acknowledged the improvements, such as more robust systems, while cautioning that there is still work to be done as Kenya continues to rebuild from a difficult past.
Since 2017, approximately 130 Kenyan athletes, predominantly in long-distance running, have faced doping sanctions. In June, Kenya issued its first lifetime ban to marathon runner Beatrice Toroitich and imposed a six-year ban on 10km record-holder Rhonex Kipruto. Although Coe warned of continuing sanctions, he clarified that this trend reflects the effectiveness of enforcing rigorous testing protocols.
As Coe prepares to contend for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Greece later this month, he remains focused on maintaining momentum and instilling trust in the initiatives combating doping in athletics.
