During his address, Jaishankar outlined three critical actions taken by India: removing Article 370; promoting economic growth and social justice in Kashmir; and facilitating high-turnout elections. He asserted, “I think the part we are waiting for is the return of the stolen part of Kashmir… I assure you Kashmir will be solved” once that occurs.
He also reflected on recent dialogues between India and Pakistan, noting the first direct communication between their Foreign Ministers since 2015 occurred in October. Discussions included potential resumption of cricketing ties, signaling a thaw in relations between the two nations.
Jaishankar’s address at the session titled ‘India’s rise and role in the world’ also included commentary on US-India relations, mentioning ongoing discussions on trade as Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal visited Washington to address tariffs under the new Republican administration. He indicated that there is a consensus on pursuing a bilateral trade agreement following discussions between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump.
In discussing India-China relations, Jaishankar pointed to a “unique relationship” that has seen developments since October 2024, including the Mount Kailash pilgrimage. He conveyed a desire for mutual recognition of interests and sensitivities as the countries move forward in their diplomatic ties.
