Extreme Temperature Projections for IGAD Region – March 2025 Update

The GHACOF 69 has forecasted warmer-than-normal temperatures for the IGAD region from March to May 2025, with February showing consistent extreme temperature anomalies, especially in South Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya, reaching highs of 40°C, posing risks for health and economies.

The 69th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 69) revealed a seasonal forecast for March to May 2025, indicating a strong likelihood of warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the IGAD region. ICPAC emphasized the need for continuous updates on forecasts, particularly on sub-seasonal scales, to manage climate-related hazards effectively.

Weekly forecasting throughout February demonstrated persistent warmer temperature anomalies across the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA), heightening the risk of extreme temperature events. Analysis of February observations showed that regions in South Sudan, Uganda, northern and western Kenya consistently experienced extreme temperatures.

Daily maximum temperatures from February 1 to 28 indicated that much of South Sudan, sections of southeastern Sudan, northern Kenya, and southern Somalia exceeded 38°C. Record highs reached 40°C in certain areas of South Sudan and Kenya. These elevated temperatures present significant risks to human health, livestock, and overall socioeconomic stability in the affected regions.

The GHACOF 69 seasonal forecast highlights an expected increase in warmer temperatures across the IGAD region during March to May 2025. With recent observations indicating temperatures exceeding 40°C in parts of South Sudan and Kenya, immediate attention is needed to mitigate the potential adverse effects on human health and socio-economic activities.
