Severe clashes are ongoing in Sudan between the army and Rapid Support Forces, primarily in Khartoum and Sennar State. Recent RSF shelling has resulted in multiple fatalities, particularly affecting displacement camps and residential areas. The Sudanese army has launched operations to reclaim territories while the humanitarian crisis intensifies with staggering casualty figures.
Fierce clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have erupted in Khartoum and southeastern Sennar State. Reports indicate that heavy weaponry has been utilized, with many witnesses describing powerful explosions and visible smoke in the area, particularly in central Khartoum. Activists also noted skirmishes in the Al-Dali and Al-Mazmum regions, regarded as RSF’s last strongholds in Sennar.
In a tragic development, a relief committee reported that RSF shelling on the Abu Shouk displacement camp in El-Fasher resulted in six fatalities and numerous injuries. Darfur Governor Arcua Minnawi labeled the RSF’s actions, including their siege and starvation tactics in El-Fasher, as significant humanitarian violations and crimes.
The Khartoum State Health Ministry reported that a child was among those killed during intense RSF artillery shelling in Omdurman’s Karari district. This attack specifically targeted residential areas, including the Al-Thawra neighborhood and a local girls’ school, leading to multiple injuries.
In response, Sudan’s armed forces conducted a successful multi-area operation aimed at incapacitating RSF units. Army spokesperson Nabil Abdullah confirmed the reclaiming of several towns across White Nile, Sennar, and Blue Nile states, asserting that the army has now regained control over Sennar State, while RSF maintains a minimal presence in White Nile and Blue Nile.
Since hostilities began in mid-April 2023, the conflict has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced 14 million individuals according to UN reports. Contrastingly, studies from US universities estimate the death toll to be approximately 130,000, highlighting the discrepancy in the reported figures.
The conflict in Sudan continues to escalate with fierce clashes between the army and RSF, marked by significant civilian casualties and humanitarian crises.
