BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla Discusses India-Pakistan Cricket Relations

Rajeev Shukla, BCCI vice-president, stated that cricket ties with Pakistan depend on Indian government clearance. He praised Pakistan’s successful hosting of the Champions Trophy, marking a significant ICC event. He expressed skepticism about bilateral matches at neutral venues, adhering to BCCI’s policy of home-ground play and governmental consent.

On March 5, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla addressed the topic of resuming cricketing ties between India and Pakistan. He emphasized that any bilateral series will only proceed with the Indian government’s approval. Shukla had recently visited Lahore at the invitation of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to attend the Champions Trophy semi-final at Gaddafi Stadium.

Shukla recognized Pakistan’s successful hosting of the ICC event, which was significant as it marked the first time in 29 years that Pakistan had hosted an ICC tournament. He expressed his appreciation for Pakistan’s organization, stating, “Pakistan is hosting an international tournament after a long time, and it is a good thing. They have organized it well.”

When questioned about the potential for a bilateral series at a neutral venue, Shukla expressed skepticism. He noted that while fans from both countries desire the matches to occur, the BCCI policy has been that bilateral games should occur on home soil. “This has been BCCI’s consistent policy,” he added.

Shukla further clarified the importance of governmental consent, as per ICC provisions. He affirmed that while other countries are eager to host India-Pakistan matches, the BCCI presents cases to the government, which makes decisions after thorough consideration. He stated, “When the government takes a decision, it is after considering a lot of aspects. It is their internal matter.”

Rajeev Shukla’s statements highlight the complexity of cricketing relations between India and Pakistan, heavily influenced by governmental approval. His recognition of Pakistan’s capabilities in hosting international tournaments reflects a willingness to consider cricketing ties, albeit under strict governmental regulations. The BCCI’s stance on bilateral matches at neutral venues remains firm, emphasizing the significance of home soil in these encounters.
