Russia Condemns Military Threats Against Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

Russia has condemned military threats against Iran’s nuclear sites, arguing they hinder diplomatic solutions and could result in severe consequences. Mikhail Ulyanov’s statements underscore Iran’s verification status with the IAEA and the ongoing need for political engagement as tensions around the JCPOA persist. He criticizes the lack of good faith from the West while affirming Iran’s willingness to comply if sanctions are lifted.

Russia has condemned threats of military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, deeming such threats as potentially catastrophic. Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the IAEA, stated that unsubstantiated claims against Iran are unacceptable and that military escalation would undermine diplomatic efforts, leading to dire humanitarian outcomes in the region.

Ulyanov emphasized that Iran is the most verified member of the IAEA, contrasting it with non-nuclear states critical of Iran, where discussions about developing military nuclear programs have emerged. He also highlighted the IAEA’s substantial expenditures for monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities as evidence of ongoing verification efforts under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

In response to ongoing tensions, Elbridge Colby, a US defense nominee, reiterated the need for credible military options to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Notably, Iran’s nuclear policy is founded on a religious decree banning the development and possession of nuclear arms.

Ulyanov called for renewed diplomatic engagement over the next six months as the JCPOA completion date approaches, indicating that political will is essential for effective negotiations. He pointed out the U.S. exit from the JCPOA in 2018 and the subsequent reimposition of sanctions that stifled diplomatic dialogue.

The representative urged Western nations to abandon the illusion of reactivating the JCPOA’S snapback mechanism, citing international precedents that invalidate their claims. He asserted that those pushing for sanctions now have disregarded their agreements under the JCPOA and related UN resolutions.

Despite the challenges, Iran has shown a willingness to return to compliance with the JCPOA as long as the U.S. and European allies reciprocate. Ulyanov criticized the West’s lack of genuine commitment to resolving the situation, suggesting that their approach has been misguided and not in good faith.

Russia’s strong opposition to military threats against Iran underlines the importance of diplomacy in resolving nuclear-related tensions. The emphasis on Iran’s compliance with the IAEA’s regulations and the criticism of Western policies highlight the complexities of international negotiations and obligations. Moving forward, finding a balanced, diplomatic solution is crucial for regional stability and preventing humanitarian crises.
