Armenian communities in the Middle East are grappling with severe risks posed by instability, particularly in Syria and Lebanon. Zareh Sinanyan will visit Syria in April to support affected Armenians. His office is actively aiding those relocating from Lebanon due to dire conditions, although financial resources remain limited. Over 200 Syrian-Armenians have recently arrived in Armenia.
The Armenian communities in the Middle East are facing significant security, economic, and social challenges. Zareh Sinanyan, the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, highlighted the precarious situation in Syria on March 4, underscoring the instability affecting Armenians in the region. Sinanyan is set to visit Syria in April to assess conditions and support those impacted by the recent crises.
During the Aleppo offensive, many Armenian residents sought evacuation but faced logistical difficulties. Sinanyan noted that while some managed to flee, the influx of Syrian-Armenians to Armenia has increased lately, with over 200 arrivals since December of the previous year. This trend calls for continued attention to the well-being of the Armenian community in Syria.
Lebanon remains a focal point of concern due to deteriorating living conditions. Sinanyan reported ongoing financial hardships among the Armenian population there, prompting increased efforts from his office to assist those who wish to relocate. Resources are being allocated to support relocation efforts, although an open emergency fund is desired for more effective assistance.
The integration center led by Sinanyan’s office is actively helping Armenians facing hardship in Lebanon. They have collaborated with partners to cover costs such as travel and accommodation for families seeking assistance. Sinanyan emphasized the need to create dignified residence conditions in Armenia to prevent Armenians from seeking alternatives in other countries.
The increasing instability in the Middle East, particularly in Syria and Lebanon, is a matter of urgent concern for the Armenian Diaspora. Zareh Sinanyan’s upcoming visit to Syria aims to assess and address these challenges. The Armenian government’s efforts to facilitate relocations and provide support are crucial in managing the plight of Armenians in these regions, necessitating ongoing resource allocation and collaboration.
