Akpabio operates an impressive convoy of 11 vehicles including two bulletproof Mercedes-Benz S-Class models and several Toyota Land Cruisers. Meanwhile, his deputy and other leaders follow suit with fleets of luxury vehicles. This massive expenditure has raised eyebrows given the nation’s staggering inflation rate and the drastic rise in food prices, which have doubled.
The financial strain of these convoys is significant. Estimates suggest that the fleets utilized by Akpabio and Abass cost around ₦7 billion combined. This does not include additional expenses incurred from private or presidential aircraft used for travel outside Abuja. Such lavish spending contravenes the financial limits outlined by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
The RMAFC sets strict guidelines limiting the car allowances for lawmakers, which are grossly exceeded by these acquisitions. Despite constitutional allowances for vehicle loans, the amounts approved are far too low compared to the luxury purchases made by the National Assembly’s leaders. Legal challenges have emerged from organizations like SERAP, demanding an end to such wasteful spending amid widespread suffering.
As President Bola Tinubu promotes fiscal discipline among citizens, the lawmakers continue to embrace opulence. In recognition of the burdens large convoys place on public finances, Tinubu has directed officials to reduce their convoys, but the Assembly remains uninfluenced by this directive.
Critics, including Mboho Eno from the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, argue this behavior underscores a disconnect between politicians and the everyday hardships faced by Nigerians. He emphasizes the need for transparency in lawmakers’ financial dealings and the public disclosure of tax information and budget allocations.
In response to inquiries regarding their lavish lifestyles, Akpabio’s aides dismissed claims of an extensive convoy, asserting that only one official vehicle is used. However, this assertion contradicts the observations made by various sources, which detail multiple vehicles accompanying Akpabio and providing significant security detail.
