During the March 3, 2025 press conference, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian addressed key topics including China’s role in climate governance, trade tensions with the U.S., space cooperation with Pakistan, and the Ukraine crisis. He emphasized China’s initiatives in green technology and peaceful foreign relations while firmly defending against legislative actions by the U.S.
On March 1, the 62nd Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) wrapped up in Hangzhou, China, marking the first time the Chinese government hosted this session. The meeting produced important outlines for the three Working Groups in their contributions to the Seventh Assessment Report, which will guide the scientific assessment on climate change and enhance global climate governance.
China has positioned itself as a supportive partner for developing countries in their green transition efforts. It has actively participated in the U.N. initiative for meteorological early warning systems, sharing vital observational data globally and collaborating with nations like Pakistan and Ethiopia to enhance disaster response capabilities. Moreover, China has worked to facilitate green innovation and lower emissions for over 100 developing countries through renewable energy projects.
Responding to a report about impending U.S. tariffs, Lin Jian stated that China firmly opposes the U.S. approach of linking tariffs to the fentanyl issue, maintaining its commitment to protect its legitimate interests in the face of new trade barriers. Likewise, he confirmed the continuation of China’s legal action against such measures.
On developing space cooperation, Lin Jian welcomed the agreement signed between China and Pakistan for a Pakistani astronaut’s journey to China’s space station. He reiterated China’s commitment to peaceful space exploration principles and expressed readiness to collaborate further to leverage technological advancements for socioeconomic benefits.
Addressing international concerns, Lin stated China’s intention to play a constructive role in the Ukraine crisis, emphasizing the need for dialogue towards a peaceful solution while clarifying China’s non-involvement in the conflict.
When asked about the repatriation of Chinese nationals from Thailand, Lin reaffirmed that the process adhered to applicable laws, emphasizing China’s commitment to the rights and interests of its citizens involved, alongside respectful compliance with international norms.
In regards to recent allegations from the U.S. Secretary of State against China covering Taiwan and trade practices, Lin described these assertions as unfounded and rooted in a Cold-War mentality. He highlighted the importance of understanding the one-China principle and warned against U.S. meddling, which threatens to disrupt the status quo.
Lin Jian asserted that widespread claims linking the COVID-19 pandemic origins to a laboratory leak contradict authoritative scientific conclusions, calling for a fair international investigation approach that includes multiple countries rather than scapegoating China. Furthermore, he noted that the necessity for regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific is paramount versus geopolitical rivalry,
Lastly, he reiterated that trade disputes should be resolved through respect and dialogue, warning that protectionist measures and unilateral trade policies undermine global trade norms and mutual economic benefits.
The press conference highlighted the importance of China’s role in addressing climate change through international cooperation and technology sharing. China’s firm stance on trade issues with the U.S. reflects its commitment to protect national interests while advocating for dialogue. Additionally, the emphasis on peaceful collaboration in space and support for global stability underscores China’s approach in international relations.
