Botswana Reroutes Traffic to Namibia Amidst Severe Flooding

Botswana has rerouted traffic to Namibia due to severe flooding, causing the closure of several border posts with South Africa. The Trans Kalahari Corridor Secretariat warns of potential congestion at Namibian borders and advises motorists to plan their routes carefully while addressing environmental concerns and ongoing protests that may impact traffic.

Botswana has rerouted all traffic to Namibia due to severe flooding affecting several border posts with South Africa. The Trans Kalahari Corridor Secretariat (TKCS) has issued a public warning about the anticipated congestion at Namibian borders as a result of these changes. Motorists, especially truck drivers, are encouraged to strategically plan their routes to minimize delays and complications.

Border posts affected by the flooding include Stockpoort/Parr’s Halt, Makgobistad/Phitsane Molopo, Bray, Groblersbridge/Martins Drift, and Pontdrift. Traffic will now be diverted to other border crossings along the Trans Kalahari Corridor (TKC), specifically Tlokweng/Kopfontein, Pioneer/Skilpadshek, and Ramatlabama. This rerouting is expected to increase congestion significantly at TKC borders, leading to long queues and delays.

Leslie Mpofu, the TKCS executive director, noted, “It is anticipated that the closure of these borders will increase traffic at the TKC borders, causing delays and long queues.” He also pointed out that environmental issues, sanitation, littering, and inadequate drinking water for truck drivers could arise from increased traffic.

Mpofu emphasized the need for rapid response from border authorities to address these potential challenges, ensuring the welfare of transporters. In addition, he warned travelers of ongoing service delivery protests on the N4 highway between Zeerust and Skilpadshek, stating, “TKCS wishes to advise users of the corridor to remain calm, patient, and cooperative as the situation is being resolved.”

The TKCS is monitoring the situation closely at the affected ports of entry and will provide ongoing updates. Travelers are advised to stay informed of developing conditions and prepare for extended delays in their journeys.

The severe flooding in Botswana has necessitated a rerouting of traffic to Namibia, impacting several border posts with South Africa. The TKCS has alerted the public to expect delays and congestion at new border crossings. Travelers should remain cautious of ongoing situations, including protests, while health and sanitation concerns for transporters are being addressed. Continuous monitoring will provide updates for those traveling through the area.
