Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévot has called for Europe to enhance its defense autonomy amid the Ukraine conflict. Following talks with India’s Prime Minister Modi, Belgium plans to strengthen defense cooperation with India, including a forthcoming MoU. The Belgian delegation, comprising over 300 business leaders, aims to fortify economic ties while addressing the impact of sanctions on the diamond industry. A joint venture between Belgian and Indian firms focuses on tank turret production for the Indian Army.
Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot emphasized that Europe must develop its own “strategic autonomy” in defense amidst the evolving dynamics of the Ukraine conflict. This statement was made following discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and calls for greater defense cooperation between Belgium and India. Notably, an MoU on defense partnership is expected to be signed by the end of 2025.
The delegation from Belgium included over 300 business leaders on an economic mission to India. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken confirmed plans to strengthen military collaboration, aiming to advance India’s defense capabilities. This includes the posting of a Defense Attaché in India to facilitate ongoing and future cooperation.
Prévot reiterated Belgium’s commitment to supporting Ukraine amid criticisms of changing narratives regarding aggressors and victims in the conflict. He pointed out that while discussions on Ukraine did not occur directly with Modi, there is an appreciation of Europe’s concerns and expectation of India as a reliable partner in defense enhancement.
In terms of new initiatives, the Belgian firm John Cockerill Defence is collaborating with Pune-based Electro Pneumatics & Hydraulics to produce tank turrets in India. This partnership targets the Indian Army’s light tank requirements, including contributions to the Zorawar light tank project spearheaded by India’s DRDO.
The extensive visit included signing 24 MoUs across various sectors, such as food processing and health. Additionally, ongoing negotiations address challenges regarding G-7 sanctions impacting India’s diamond industry, with Belgium’s role as a certifying authority being a point of discussion.
The visit by the Belgian delegation highlights the urgent need for Europe to bolster its defense independence while fostering bilateral relations with India. By signing an MoU for defense cooperation and establishing a joint venture for tank turret production, both nations aim to significantly enhance their military capabilities. Additionally, ongoing dialogues about the diamond industry further exemplify the multifaceted nature of Indo-Belgian relations.
