Recognizing this need, a project was initiated to provide digital advisories through Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology, which allows farmers to receive critical information via basic mobile phones.
Launched in December 2023 before the 2023/24 agricultural season, the digital advisory campaign in Malawi and Zambia aimed to educate farmers during an El Niño event. Feedback from farmers indicated that over 90% found the messages effective for risk awareness and preparedness. Notably, radio emerged as the preferred medium for disseminating these critical extension messages, highlighting its role in reaching rural populations.
The campaign data emphasized the importance of meteorological forecasts in farmers’ decision-making regarding crop selection and planting schedules. For example, extended dry spells exceeding 21 days resulted in significant maize yield losses ranging from 70% to 90%. Additionally, findings revealed that farmers widely adopted conservation agriculture practices and drought-resistant crops to mitigate these impacts.
The investigation suggests that governments must have timely access to information regarding their citizens’ agricultural circumstances to facilitate effective support decisions. Digital advisories not only furnish real-time insights into farm conditions but also aid in deploying timely assistance. Furthermore, analysis of past events can enhance future strategic responses and lessen reliance on donor support.
The analysis underscores the critical role of digital advisories in empowering farmers to navigate climate challenges effectively. With over a million farmers reached, the initiative illustrates the value of timely information delivery and the importance of adapting agricultural practices based on meteorological insights.
