On December 17, 2024, the National Human Rights Center of Uzbekistan hosted a ceremony in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland and the ICRC Regional Delegation in Central Asia. This event marked the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions and featured the presentation of their Uzbek translation in Latin script, which reflects the recent transition from the Cyrillic alphabet to Latin in Uzbekistan.
Over 50 attendees participated, including deputies from the Legislative Chamber, Senate members, and representatives from various sectors, including media and academia. The event underscored the significance of the Geneva Conventions in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and aimed to enhance public understanding of these legal foundations.
Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Human Rights Center, emphasized the Geneva Conventions’ importance, stating, “The Geneva Conventions form the cornerstone of International Humanitarian Law. Their translation into Uzbek using Latin script is a crucial step towards enhancing the legal culture of our society…”. Ambassador Konstantin Obolensky reinforced Switzerland’s support of international law while commending Uzbekistan’s efforts in promoting humanitarian principles.
Biljana Milosevic from the ICRC expressed the relevance of IHL today, stating, “The principles of International Humanitarian Law are increasingly pertinent in today’s world…” This translation initiative aims to ensure access to these critical treaties for the Uzbek population.
The ceremony featured a video presentation and a photo exhibition titled “Dialogues on Humanity,” highlighting the humanitarian significance of the Geneva Conventions. The event culminated in the official unveiling of the Uzbek transliteration of the Conventions, representing Uzbekistan’s commitment to international humanitarian standards.
