Mourning a Peacemaker: Leaders Honor the Late Baringo Senator Cheptumo

Leaders paid tribute to the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, celebrating him as a peacemaker and patriot at a memorial service in Baringo. President Ruto praised his role in promoting peace and his substantial electoral success. Colleagues highlighted his respectful conduct and urged for a commitment to equitable development and political collaboration following his death.

Leaders from various political backgrounds gathered to honor the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, remembered as a peacemaker and a patriot. Thousands paid their last respects at Arap Moi Secondary School in Baringo County, reflecting on Cheptumo’s extensive political career, which included three terms as a Baringo North MP before joining the Senate.

President William Ruto and other high-ranking officials emphasized Cheptumo’s commitment to peace, highlighting his significant impact on reducing banditry in the Kerio Valley by 70%. Ruto noted, “He was a peacemaker and was a great resource during the 2007 negotiations that led to the grand coalition government after the post-election violence.” Cheptumo’s legacy includes extensive efforts to secure the region, such as deploying police and military personnel for peacekeeping.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi praised Cheptumo as an embodiment of humility, and Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula noted that throughout Cheptumo’s 15 years in parliament, he never had to be reprimanded for disorderly conduct. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi recognized him as a revered peace ambassador.

Senator Ledama Ole Kina from Narok called for a swift constitution of the IEBC to fill the vacancy left by Cheptumo’s passing, while also advocating for equitable development across all counties. He urged leaders to focus on public service, stressing that time is limited.

Both the Majority leaders of the Senate and National Assembly reflected on Cheptumo’s respectful nature and work ethic. The speakers commended President Ruto for his outreach to political rivals and advocated for emulating his cooperative approach. They supported a broad-based government for national stability.

Survived by his wife and three children, Cheptumo, a lawyer by profession, had a diverse career including roles at Kenya Commercial Bank and the Central Bank of Kenya. He also served as Assistant Minister for Justice, National Cohesion, and Constitutional Affairs from 2007 to 2013 after first being elected as an MP in 2007.

The tribute to Senator William Cheptumo highlights his legacy as a dedicated peacemaker and leader committed to national stability. Esteemed by colleagues for his humility and integrity, Cheptumo’s contributions to peace and governance are celebrated, prompting calls for leaders to follow his example in public service. His passing leaves a significant void, underlining the need for continued development and political unity in the country.
