Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claims the GEMA communities will be crucial in forming Kenya’s next government, regardless of Raila Odinga’s involvement. He believes their unity could secure political power for a century. Gachagua also critiques President Ruto’s reliance on Odinga and signals a shift in the political landscape as he seeks alliances for the 2027 elections.
Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President of Kenya, has stated that the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Akamba (GEMA) communities will be pivotal in determining the next government, irrespective of opposition leader Raila Odinga’s support. During a church service in Machakos, he expressed confidence in GEMA’s capacity to influence Kenya’s political landscape.
Gachagua declared, “GEMA ndiyo dawa ya Kenya. GEMA itaunda the next government,” illustrating his belief in the community’s unity for political power. He reassured his followers that they have sufficient strength to achieve victory in the upcoming 2027 general elections, asserting, “We have looked at the numbers and they are good, with or without him (Raila).”
Additionally, Gachagua criticized President William Ruto, suggesting his political future now depends largely on Raila Odinga’s influence, stating, “Life support machine ya Ruto ni Raila saa hii. Akizima, amekwisha,” implying Ruto may struggle for re-election in 2027. He ominously predicted that Ruto could lose his current position, suggesting, “Ruto atakuwa number three ama number four 2027.”
He further proclaimed that a united GEMA could ensure their leadership for the next century, saying, “If we unite as GEMA, we shall be in power for the next 100 years.” These remarks come as Gachagua is reportedly considering alliances with opposition figures, hinting at a possible collaboration with Odinga to challenge Ruto.
Gachagua criticized the recent political arrangement between Odinga and Ruto, perceiving it as a betrayal of opposition ideals. During discussions with Kamba radio stations, he expressed uncertainty about Odinga’s intentions: “I do not understand Raila’s intentions; it is his choice whether he wants to be with Ruto and water down his political legacy or join the side of liberating this country.”
Reflecting on the upcoming elections, Gachagua believes that Gen Z voters, crucial in 2022, will not support Ruto again. He stated, “Ruto is not getting a vote from the 9 million Kenyan Gen Zs,” emphasizing that Kenyans desire a new government that meets their needs.
To create a strong opposition coalition, Gachagua has engaged with key political figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, and Eugene Wamalwa. His actions indicate significant changes in Kenya’s political dynamics as the 2027 elections approach.
Rigathi Gachagua, confident in GEMA’s influential role, insists that the community can steer Kenya’s next government formation, independent of Raila Odinga. His criticism of President Ruto and sentiments regarding Gen Z voter support illustrate a potential realignment in the political landscape. With strategic alliances forming, Gachagua’s insights could significantly impact the 2027 elections.
