On Sunday, Egypt rejected efforts to establish a rival government in Sudan, emphasizing that such attempts threaten Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Sudan is currently experiencing a prolonged conflict involving the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leading to severe humanitarian challenges as identified by the United Nations.
Recently, the RSF and its affiliates declared in Kenya the establishment of a “government of peace and unity” for regions they control. In response, Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement equally condemning these actions, stating they complicate Sudan’s situation, hinder political unification efforts, and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.
Egypt urged all Sudanese factions to prioritize national interests and engage in a comprehensive, inclusive political process without external influences. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reiterated this position, asserting that Sudan’s territorial integrity is non-negotiable for Egypt, and any alternative governance structures are unacceptable.
Criticism of the paramilitary’s actions has been widespread, including from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who remarked that these efforts may fragment Sudan further. Additionally, Saudi Arabia condemned the RSF’s move, while Kuwait and Qatar supported Sudan’s national integrity, reiterating their rejection of actions outside legitimate state frameworks.
Egypt has strongly opposed the formation of any parallel government in Sudan, citing threats to national unity and leading discussions to foster political stability. The international community, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, has echoed these sentiments, denouncing actions that undermine Sudan’s official governance structures.
