East Bank Demerara NDCs Receive Mini Excavators to Boost Drainage Capacity

Six mini excavators worth $96 million were handed over to six NDCs along the East Bank of Demerara, enhancing local drainage capacity. Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha presented the excavators, supported by Local Government Minister Sonia Parag, following directives from President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo to equip all NDCs for better drainage maintenance.

Residents of Mocha/Arcadia and surrounding areas along the East Bank of Demerara will benefit from improved drainage capabilities due to the recent acquisition of six mini excavators. These machines, valued at approximately $96 million, were distributed among six Neighborhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) to enhance local drainage systems.

On Friday, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha officially delivered the mini excavators to the chairpersons and representatives of the Eccles/Ramsburg, Mocha/Arcadia, Little Diamond/Herstelling, Soesdyke/T’Huis te/Coverden, and Hauraruni/Yarrowkabra NDCs. Minister of Local Government Sonia Parag accompanied him during the event.

Minister Mustapha emphasized that this initiative was part of a broader effort by President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo to empower NDCs across Guyana. The leaders instructed that all NDCs should receive a mini excavator to facilitate the clearing and maintenance of community drainage channels, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure.
