Türkiye Urges Ceasefire as Sudan’s Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Türkiye has called for a ceasefire in Sudan in light of the escalating conflict that has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and massive displacements. The Turkish Foreign Ministry stressed the importance of protecting Sudan’s sovereignty while offering support for conflict resolution and stability. The ongoing violence has led to severe humanitarian issues, with millions facing famine.

On Saturday, Türkiye expressed sorrow over the escalating conflict in Sudan and urged for a ceasefire to be established. “We are deeply saddened by the ongoing escalation of the conflict in Sudan and the worsening humanitarian situation. We once again call on the parties for a ceasefire and peace to prevent further bloodshed,” stated Oncu Keceli, spokesperson for the Turkish Foreign Ministry, as reported by News.Az citing Anadolu.

Keceli highlighted the necessity of refraining from actions that might jeopardize Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence. Furthermore, he declared, “Türkiye is ready to provide all necessary support for the immediate resolution of the conflict and the establishment of peace, security, and stability in our friendly and brotherly country, Sudan.”

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been engaged in violent clashes resulting in over 20,000 fatalities and displacing 14 million people, according to UN and local data. The World Food Program indicates that approximately two million individuals across 27 locations in Sudan are facing famine conditions or are close to starvation.

The international community, including the United Nations, has increasingly urged for an end to the hostilities, warning of a looming humanitarian crisis as millions confront food shortages leading to potential famine and death. The conflict has regrettably spread to 13 of Sudan’s 18 states, intensifying the humanitarian plight.

Türkiye’s call for a ceasefire in Sudan emphasizes the urgent need for peace amid escalating violence that has caused significant loss of life and displacement. The situation remains critical, with millions at risk of famine. The international community’s pressure for a resolution highlights the humanitarian concerns that must be addressed to prevent further catastrophe.
