Turkey Provides Educational Refuge for Sudanese Students Amid Civil War

Turkey is providing educational opportunities for Sudanese students affected by the civil war through the “Guest University Initiative.” The initiative facilitates the enrollment of students from Al-Butana University at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, ensuring educational continuity in a safe environment amid the conflict. Turkish officials aim to support Sudan during this humanitarian crisis by fostering academic cooperation.

Turkey has emerged as a refuge for Sudanese students and academics affected by the ongoing civil war in Sudan, allowing them to continue their education. Under the coordination of Turkey’s Council of Higher Education, displaced students from Al-Butana University are now enrolled at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, providing them with the opportunity to advance their studies.

Since the civil unrest began on April 15, 2023, major conflicts between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have disrupted educational institutions. The United Nations reports that Sudan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with over 20,000 fatalities and 3.5 million people fleeing the country. This turmoil has severely damaged Al-Butana University’s facilities, prompting intervention from the Turkish government to support affected students.

In response, the “Guest University Initiative” was launched, enabling the transfer of 18 individuals from Al-Butana University to Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. This program includes the university’s rector, administrative staff, faculty, and students, ensuring they can continue their education in a stable and safe environment while aiming to contribute positively upon returning to Sudan.

Erol Özvar, President of Turkey’s Higher Education Council, indicated that discussions with Sudanese officials led to this initiative, as many universities in Sudan were closing due to conflict. The collaboration proposes hosting three key Sudanese universities at Turkish institutions to sustain educational opportunities and prevent university shutdowns.

Özvar emphasized that Sudanese students and faculty have already resumed studies at the Turkish campus, with Bahri University and Al-Neelain University also set to partner with Selçuk University and İnönü University respectively. He noted the initiative exemplifies cooperation between Turkey and Sudan, demonstrating Turkey’s longstanding support for scholars facing challenges in their home countries.

Additionally, Al-Butana University Rector Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud expressed his gratitude towards Turkey for offering support amid the crisis. Although the university shifted to online learning, limited resources hindered effective education. He recognized Turkey’s commitment to higher education and its willingness to assist scholars in need during difficult times.

Sudanese students like Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla have shared optimism about their academic futures in Turkey. Faragalla plans to leverage advanced research facilities to enhance his biochemistry studies, aiming to apply his newly gained knowledge back in Sudan. Similarly, Rashida Ebrahim Hussein, a veterinary medicine student, looks forward to learning modern techniques that she will apply to benefit Sudan’s livestock industry.

In summary, Turkey is providing a safe educational environment for Sudanese students displaced by civil war, fostering resilience amid adversity. The ‘Guest University Initiative’ facilitates continuity in education, ensuring that students can complete their studies while awaiting peace in their homeland. This partnership underscores Turkey’s longstanding commitment to supporting scholars facing challenges and emphasizes the importance of educational collaboration in times of crisis.
