Brazil’s Mero field has reached a production peak of 500,000 barrels of oil per day, marking it as the third Petrobras field to achieve this. The field’s growth is supported by technological advancements and four operational platforms, including the upcoming FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão, which will boost capacity significantly. Mero is critical to Brazil’s oil landscape, contributing to 81% of Petrobras’ total output.
The Mero field, situated in the pre-salt layer of Brazil’s Santos Basin, achieved a significant production milestone on February 28, reaching 500,000 barrels of oil per day. This makes it the third Petrobras field to exceed this production level. Since its first oil extraction in 2017, advancements in technology and innovation have driven its productivity.
Currently, four platforms are operational in the Mero Field, with the FPSO Pioneiro de Libra being the pioneer since the start of production. The project will soon be strengthened by the addition of FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão, expected to enhance the field’s capacity to 770,000 barrels per day when it begins operations in 2025.
Magda Chambriard, CEO of Petrobras, emphasized that the achievement reflects collaboration across multiple sectors and the use of advanced technologies while maintaining a commitment to sustainability. The pre-salt region now constitutes 81% of Petrobras’ overall production, underscoring its importance in Brazil’s oil production landscape.
The Mero field ranks as Brazil’s third largest in oil volume, outperformed only by Tupi and Búzios fields. The increase in output is anticipated with the integration of FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias and the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão. Petrobras has placed focus on minimizing greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing oil recovery efficiency.
Discovered in 2010 and located 180 km off Rio de Janeiro at a depth of 2,100 meters, the Mero field falls under the Libra Production Sharing Contract. The field is a joint venture led by Petrobras (38.6%) along with partners including Shell Brasil, TotalEnergies, and CNOOC, ensuring diverse contributions to its operation.
The Mero field’s recent achievement of producing 500,000 barrels per day highlights Petrobras’ ongoing advancements in technology and commitment to sustainable operations. With further expansions planned, including the FPSO Alexandre de Gusmão, the Mero field is poised to play an increasingly vital role in Brazil’s oil production, contributing significantly to the country’s energy needs and economic development.
