Kenya has received Sh360 million in rice donations from China to support 2.8 million people in 23 ASAL counties suffering from food insecurity due to recent droughts. Officials highlight the importance of community resilience and alternative livelihoods to combat climate impacts. China continues to strengthen bilateral relations by providing assistance during crises.
The Government of Kenya has received rice donations valued at Sh360 million from the People’s Republic of China, aimed at aiding over 2.8 million people in 23 Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) counties. The assistance is intended to enhance food security in regions adversely affected by low rainfall earlier this year, which follows multiple failed rainy seasons since 2021.
During the donation launch in Kumpa, Kajiado Central, Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands and Regional Development, Beatrice Askul, stressed the necessity of fostering community resilience to mitigate the impacts of climate change. She encouraged communities to adopt diverse livelihood strategies to withstand prolonged droughts. “We have received 40,000 bags of rice to assist communities in ASAL areas who are facing drought due to below normal rainfall,” she stated.
Askul expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its continuous support during Kenya’s crises, particularly those related to natural disasters. She highlighted the importance of engaging financial and technical aid from development partners to reinforce food security and resilience within affected communities.
Principal Secretary for ASAL and Regional Development, Kello Harsama, reiterated the need for resilience-building initiatives, noting that the Ministry is implementing water and agricultural projects, such as boreholes and dams, to promote local food production. These efforts aim to prepare communities for future drought scenarios by enhancing their agricultural capabilities and enabling effective resource management.
Mr. Zhou Zhencheng, Minister Counselor from the People’s Republic of China, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Kenya, underscoring the growing bilateral relations in various developmental sectors. “The People’s Republic of China will continue supporting Kenya during such tough times as drought or floods,” he stated, affirming mutual collaboration between the two nations.
In summary, Kenya’s receipt of Sh360 million in rice donations from China represents a crucial effort to support communities grappling with food insecurity due to climate-induced challenges. The Kenyan government, through its various initiatives, aims to build resilience and promote sustainable livelihoods in ASAL regions, ensuring better preparedness for future droughts.
