Albania has officially endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, labeling it as a “serious and credible foundation for the resolution of this regional dispute.” This endorsement came during a joint statement signed by Albania’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, in Rabat on Saturday.
The declaration emphasized Albania’s recognition of the significance of the Western Sahara issue to Morocco, as well as Morocco’s substantial efforts under the United Nations framework to find a solution that is mutually acceptable.
The support from Albania contributes to the increasing international backing for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan, which aims for significant self-governance of the territory while maintaining Moroccan sovereignty.
Both ministers reiterated their commitment to a UN-led political process, supporting UN Secretary-General Personal Envoy Staffan De Mistura in achieving a peaceful resolution in line with the UN Security Council’s resolutions, particularly Resolution 2756 (2024).
Albania’s support marks a significant moment in Morocco’s diplomatic efforts regarding Western Sahara, joining a growing list of over 100 nations, including more than 20 from Europe, that back Morocco’s sovereignty claims.
This endorsement reflects Albania’s diplomatic shift following the severance of ties with the Polisario Front in 2004, further solidified in 2015 when Albania officially supported Morocco’s territorial integrity.
In addition to discussing Western Sahara, the ministers addressed bilateral cooperation, highlighting Albania’s interest in Morocco’s Atlantic initiatives that promote Sahel countries’ access to the ocean and Morocco’s status as a regional stability hub.
Both nations agreed to strengthen cultural and economic cooperation, with Morocco lifting visa requirements for Albanian citizens traveling for short visits, encouraging tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
Both ministers underscored their commitment to fostering peace and stability in their regions and globally, advocating for peaceful conflict resolutions and respect for national sovereignty.
The official support from Albania for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara marks a significant diplomatic achievement for Morocco, amidst growing global backing. The meeting further solidified bilateral relations, focusing on cooperation in various sectors and supporting regional stability initiatives. Both nations expressed their commitment to international collaboration and enhancing their historical ties while acknowledging respective sovereignty and territorial integrity.
