While exploring local Free-to-Air channels, I encountered a Hollywood blockbuster airing without any licensing—an act of piracy that showcases the troubling state of Uganda’s film industry. Such incidents highlight the pervasive nature of piracy, which silently undermines Uganda’s creative economy. The issue is not merely a local concern, but part of a larger global epidemic impacting financial returns across the film sector.
Immediate and effective measures are essential to combat piracy that undermines Uganda’s creative industry. Strengthening regulations, imposing penalties on violators, and fostering collaboration among filmmakers and broadcasters are crucial steps. As piracy threatens potential growth and stifles local talent, stakeholders must act decisively to protect Uganda’s film sector before it reaches a point of no return.
