The yearlong study, conducted from October 2021 to September 2022, found that Kenyan bee farmers experienced an average loss of 36% of honeybee colonies, attributed mainly to climate change. The Western honeybee,

Research methods included face-to-face interviews with 589 beekeepers across diverse Kenyan climates, such as coastal areas and tropical forests. Findings revealed higher colony losses during hot, dry periods (up to 31.9%) than in wet seasons (up to 20.2%). Limited data on African honeybee colonies underscores the need for more research in sub-Saharan regions.

Malena Sibaja Leyton, one of the study’s co-authors, emphasizes the link between increased temperatures and colony losses, advocating for water supplementation as a feasible management strategy.
