Senegal’s U17 national football team, known as the Lionceaux, is enhancing its training regimen in preparation for the TotalEnergies CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This follows their successful participation in a friendly tournament in Casablanca, where they finished undefeated. The upcoming AFCON will take place in Morocco from March 30 to April 19.
Upon returning to Dakar, the squad has resumed rigorous training sessions and organized several friendly matches to improve their competition readiness. Head coach Pape Ibrahima Faye has highlighted the team’s positive trajectory while acknowledging areas that still require improvement.
“We won against Zambia 5-0, drew with Morocco, and defeated Egypt. It’s encouraging, but there is still work to be done,” stated Faye. He emphasized the importance of tactical, physical, and mental development as the team continues their preparations.
Despite their past successes in Casablanca, the coaching staff is concentrating on honing critical aspects of the team’s play, ensuring optimal readiness before the tournament. The Lionceaux plan to compete against Senegal’s U20 team and clubs from Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, providing intense match practice against seasoned opponents.
The team is also considering participation in an international tournament in Turkey, which would enhance their exposure to varied playing styles ahead of the AFCON. Faye noted the importance of this experience, stating, “We have submitted our action plan and hope to play in this tournament. It would be a great opportunity for our players to test themselves against different opponents.”
With the reigning champions aiming to defend their U17 AFCON title, the preparation phase is critical for ensuring they perform optimally in Morocco. The coaching staff and players are dedicated to refining tactical strategies, enhancing team unity, and achieving peak performance ahead of the tournament.
